CS2 tier 1 events explained

A tier 1 CS2 event is one where most of the world’s best teams play each other for a top prize: the two Valve Majors each year, plus the biggest invite-led events from organizers such as PGL, BLAST and ESL. PGL Masters Bucharest 2026, which ends Oct 31, is one. 12 of its 16 teams were invited, it pays $1.25M, and Vitality are 61¢ on Polymarket to win it.

What makes an event tier 1

There is no official list. Valve sponsors the Majors and sets how teams qualify for them; every other event gets its tier by convention, and three things decide it in practice:

  • The field: most of the top 10 teams, usually by invitation rather than open qualifiers.

  • The prize: both 2026 Majors and PGL Masters Bucharest pay $1.25M.

  • The format: a Swiss stage or groups into a playoff bracket, best of three throughout, with a best-of-five final.

  • IEM Cologne Major: June 2 to 21, 32 teams, $1.25M

  • PGL Masters Bucharest: Oct 24 to 31, 16 teams, $1.25M

The two Majors take 32 teams through three Swiss stages. Bucharest runs one 16-team Swiss stage, all best of three, and sends the top eight to a single-elimination bracket. Dates, format and live prices for the next Major are on PGL Major Singapore 2026.

Is PGL Masters Bucharest tier 1?

Yes. Vitality, Spirit, NAVI, FURIA, MOUZ and Aurora were among the 12 invited teams, and only four came through qualifiers: Nemiga, Liquid, DENDELE and TYLOO. The winner takes $450,000 of the $1.25M.

It is a different event from PGL Bucharest in April (Apr 4 to 11). None of the eight teams rated highest on CS2 power rankings today played that one, so by the field test above it was a step down.

Price to win PGL Masters Bucharest

Why the tier matters for prices

CS2 power rankings rate every team from its average pre-series price on Kalshi over the last 90 days, adjusted for opponents, where 50 is average. Filtered to top events, with results through Oct 27, Vitality rate 73 and went 13–2, 1.4 wins above what prices expected. Spirit rate 70 but went 6–6, 2.9 wins below. Aurora went 14–6, 3.2 wins above, the most of the 15 teams ranked. A high rating and a strong record at tier 1 events are not the same thing, and EXPECTED tracks that gap for every team.

The filter changes the picture. BetBoom are 7–5 at top events on the rankings, while CS2 WIRE counts them 10–6 across all their series in 90 days, 3.2 wins above their prices. Wins outside tier 1 events make up the difference.

How teams reach the next Major

PGL Major Singapore takes 32 teams from Valve’s regional standings at the Nov 2 cutoff: 18 from Europe, 9 from the Americas and 5 from Asia. Polymarket prices five teams near even to make it, from CS2 FUTURES (read 1:21 PM ET):

  • NRG: 51¢

  • Nemiga: 50¢

  • 100 Thieves: 46¢

  • Wildcard: 46¢

Nemiga are a Bucharest semifinalist and still a coin flip to make the Major. Polymarket also lists whether FaZe win a tier 1 event in 2026, at 10¢, down 3. Roster and event markets like that one sit on Polymarket’s international site, which is not open to US residents, so read them as reference prices.
